Buying DVC Direct vs Resale

If you’re comparing buying DVC direct vs resale, it’s important to understand what you gain—and what you give up—with each option. Both paths provide access to the Disney Vacation Club system, but the cost difference and membership rules can affect your long-term satisfaction.

Buying direct from Disney gives you access to Membership Extras, such as discounts, special events, and access to certain resorts like Riviera and Disneyland Hotel. However, these benefits come at a premium. Direct pricing is often $200–$250 per point, and minimum purchases for new buyers can exceed $30,000.

Resale, by comparison, offers substantial savings. You’re buying real property with the same usage rights at your home resort and access to all legacy DVC resorts. Prices are typically 30%–50% lower than Disney’s direct rates, and you can find smaller or larger contracts based on your exact needs. Most buyers prioritize the vacation flexibility and lower entry costs over a few retail-only perks.

There are some limitations. Resale buyers can’t use points at certain resorts built after 2019 unless they buy directly. They also don’t qualify for Membership Extras unless they own a small direct contract in addition to their resale purchase. Still, most DVC members report little to no impact on how they actually use their points to vacation.

DVC Sales helps simplify this decision by offering transparent listings with real-time pricing and full contract details. Whether you’re focused on value, flexibility, or long-term savings, our team is here to help you compare your options without pressure.

In many cases, buyers use both channels—purchasing a small contract from Disney to qualify for Membership Extras, then adding resale points for affordability. We’re happy to help you explore that strategy as well.
